Ostermarkt on the Freyung
31st March – 17th April 2017
Vienna has a longstanding tradition of being the world’s Christmas market capital… but Easter is celebrated with similar enthusiasm, when every year a great number of Easter markets spring up across the city. Such is the popularity of Ostermarkts in Vienna, that you may find it difficult to choose just one to dedicate your time to, so we’ve compiled a brief guide to our favourite; which takes place on the Freyung in the beautiful historic Old Town of Vienna… located just a 15 minute walk from Grand Hotel Wien.
As you approach the market, you will instantly be drawn to the colossal pile of Easter eggs – the largest in Europe – which has been delicately constructed from a surplus of 40,000 decorated Easter eggs; and although the structure is not edible, rest assured there are plenty of other Easter delicacies for you to feast on.
Traditional Viennese Easter favourites include Osterpinze (pastry) and rabbit-shaped Lebkuchen (gingerbread), and for a more savoury indulgence, you can enjoy Osterschinken (Easter ham) and succulent slow-roasted lamb… all of which can be washed down with specialty coffees or famous Viennese wines, made from grapes grown in the vineyards that surround the city.
Ostermarkts also provide the perfect opportunity to partake in some retail therapy, and a short walk around the Freyung unearths a myriad of intricately decorated eggs and quality handcrafted goods, which have been lovingly made with painstaking attention to detail. The market also permits you to get creative yourself, and children in particular will be overjoyed by the selection of hands-on Easter workshops, where eggs of all shapes and sizes (literally) can be decorated… with some stalls offering the opportunity to customise ostrich eggs.
A variety of live music performances and children’s entertainment will also be widespread throughout the market… and the event is free to attend! So this exciting insight into an age-old Viennese tradition need not be an expensive day out, which you can experience first-hand between 31st March and the 17th April on the historic Freyung.
Easter Concerts in Vienna
15th & 16th April 2017
Vienna, as well as being the capital of Austria (and markets), is also the international capital of classical music… and throughout the year, the world’s finest musicians can be heard from the numerous historic halls that adorn the city.
The weekend of Easter Sunday is no different, as lovers of classical music have the opportunity to see the Vienna Symphony Orchestra perform two evenings at the Wiener Konzerthaus – located just a five minute walk from Grand Hotel Wien. The Wiener Symphoniker are among Europe’s elite ensembles, and on the evenings they will be joined by ‘one of the best pianists in the world’ – Jean-Yves Thibaudet.
For the performances, Philippe Jordan will conduct proceedings; where you will hear masterful renditions of music from the operetta, Candide and the musical West Side Story, composed by Leonard Bernstein… as well as Concerto in F by George Gershwin.
The Vienna Symphony Orchestra play the Wiener Konzerthaus on Saturday 15th April and Sunday 16th April, with both performances commencing from 7.30pm. Be sure to book your tickets in advance for these enthralling evenings of classical music.
On the morning of Easter Sunday, you will also be able to see the world famous Vienna Boys Choir perform during Sunday Mass at the Wiener Hofburgkapelle – located a 15 minute walk from Grand Hotel Wien. Mass begins at 9.15am, so early risers can enjoy a leisurely stroll over to the Imperial Chapel, before your ears are subjected to the angelic voices of the legendary boys choir, making for an amiable Sunday morning.
Vienna City Marathon
23rd April 2017
This April, 42,000 competitors from around the world will descend on the city to take part in the 34th edition of the Vienna City Marathon.
The 26 mile tour through the heart of the capital, provides for one of the most scenic road-running competitions in the world… which begins between the domineering skyscrapers of the Vienna International Centre. Participants then make their way along the Imperial Bridge as they cross the shimmering blue of the Danube, where the famous Danube Waltz by Johan Strauss can be heard; one of the many points of the marathon which is accompanied by classical music. The rest of the route discloses a contrasting array of modern landmarks – like the Riesenrad – and stunning examples of Gothic and Baroque architecture, embodied in the Rathaus and Burgtheater.
In addition to the main competition, there is also the option to run a half marathon, a relay marathon, the Vienna 10k and for children… two shorter Get Active events. A Vienna Sports World exposition will also be held between the 21st April and 22nd April, where 90 exhibitors will show new products and trends in sports, health, travel and events; in addition to a series of live entertainment and refreshment venues – taking place next to the Danube at Trabrennstraße.
